HARLEM BOOK FAIR CONMAN
Max Rodriguez of the Harlem Book Fair is a professional conman. Solid Gold Travel has had the unfortunate experience of being conned by him recently, leaving a huge debt and responsibility.

In early 2007, Mr. Rodriguez entered an agreement with the Bermuda Department of Tourism and Solid Gold Travel to sponsor a Cruise to Bermuda for August of 2008. When the time came for Mr. Rodriguez to pay his agreed upon deposit for the Cruise, he submitted 2 consecutive bad checks. After his second check bounced, we reached out to Mr. Rodriguez via phone and email to no response whatsoever. Now, after several months and several attempts to reach him, Mr. Rodriguez will not respond.

In recent conversations, we have found that Mr. Rodriguez has defrauded numerous other businesses and minority organizations.

As minority business owners for over 20 years, we understand the importance and value of the Black Business responsibility and reputation. Max Rodriguez has built a career out of scamming our community and should be held responsible for his actions.

If you or someone you know has been tricked, conned or ripped off by Max Rodriguez of the Harlem Book Fair, we invite you to share your story or contact us at solidbash@aol.com.

I don't think "the black intellectuals" are to blame for this one, and in fact do not think anyone should be blamed at all. There are some definite lessons to be learned from how proactive many of the street-lit authors are in promoting their books without large-scale media attention. I say kudos to them and encourage others to be as daring as they are in marketing their books, and for salvaging an event like this weekend's fair. This does not mean that I condone the content of some of these books, but it's not my place to condemn or condone if I am not offering up something substantial enough to give readers options or to engage my peers.

It's great to hear that the black middle class (?) is offended by street lit but what are they doing to promote better literature and if more established authors are not particpating and putting forth is Rodriquez the total blame? Though your book didn't sell well and you deemed it worth reading as well as the lady selling her book about little girls games affecting black women maybe those topics weren't appealing, but possibly a good mystery, lover story, action adventure, etc. would have done better. I'm not a fan of St lit either; but I do enjoy a good book (and they were truly hard to find) and was disappointed by the number of authors who were promoting it.

What the hell happened to us?!! Where are the black intellectuals?!! What happened to the pride our parents and grandparents taught us and fought for? There are so many "THEMS" now (who are proud of the ghetto life, underachievement - unless it's success through hip-hop and drug life, and poverty), it's not funny.
