It seems that “my people” are distracted once again. First, there was the Isaiah Washington firing and the subsequent call to petition ABC Entertainment and now, there is the controversy and protest over comments that comedian DL Hughley made during Tonight Show appearance a while ago.
Apparently, it went something like this: Hughley was on the couch chatting with Jay Leno. He said to Leno that he didn’t agree that the members of the Rutgers’ Women’s Basketball Team were were “hoes” but he did concede that some of them were “nappy-headed” and are “some of the ugliest women [he’d] ever seen in [his] whole life.”
As a black woman who has been called “ugly” and “nappy-headed” mainly by relatives, yes, those words do sting. But I strongly believe that I am not the name you call me but the name I answer to.. I didn’t let Imus ruin my day and I won’t let Hughley — a comedian whose work I normally really like — do so either.
Unfornately, not everyone shares my beliefs. Hughley was set to perform at Bass Hall in Fort Worth,TX last Saturday night, June 16. Prior to his appearance and after hearing of his remarks, “black ministers” and “community leaders” — the ususal suspects– decided to call for a protest.
The show went on. And I am sure that while the “black ministers” and “community leaders” were expressing their righteous indignation, somewhere in Fort Worth that night somebody was assaulted, raped, robbed, or perhaps, even murdered. And no one protested.
I believe that DL Hughley said it best in a written statement issued prior to the event:
“I believe that freedom of speech is a zero-sum proposition. Too many times, I’ve watched clowns speak for the masses. I can only speak for me. Isn’t there a child you can help to teach to read, a war to help stop, an unjustly accused man you can help out of jail? I will not apologize for telling a joke about the world as I see it.”
DL Hughley has a new show on CNN. Yes, I said, CNN. It’s called, DL Hughley Breaks the News. I watched the first episode last night. Not bad. Not bad at all. And brother did break the news of the Scott McClellan Obama endorsement. He’s getting off to a good start.
