I just don’t understand it. Didn’t they get the memo that you don’t mess with the government?
Thursday, December 6, was D-day for the six televangelical ministries served notice a month ago by Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee. Grassley requested that the ministries which include Paula and Randy White’s Church Without Walls, Benny Hinn’s World Healing Center, Creflo and Taffi Dollar’s World Changers International Church, Joyce Meyers Ministries and Bishop Eddie Long’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church submit specific documentation which would serve to help prove whether or not these prosperity doctrine churches are abusing their nonprofit status.
Of the six churches that were sent the “questionnaire” only one, two, Joyce Meyers Ministries, and Kenneth Copeland Ministries, provided the requested information. One, Benny Hinn’s World Healing Church, said it would comply with Grassley’s request…in January 2008.
And two, Dollar’s World Changers International Church and Long’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church refused to comply. According the Associated Press, Dollar stated that “the investigation should be referred to the IRS or the Senate panel should get a subpeona for the documents.”
Wow. Dollar is standing down Uncle Sam. Many have tried and all have failed. But maybe the Rev. D believes that he has God on his side.
“Hopefully these organizations will work with us,” said Grassley, who has been investigating nonprofit compliance with IRS rules for years. “I don’t think I’ve had to issue a single subpoena in the five years that I’ve been trying to get cooperation from organizations.”
