She’s really done it this time. With her open support of Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama along with what many believe to be the shameless flaunting of her opulent lifestyle, Oprah Winfrey has ruffled the feathers of even her ardent fans.
In the past, Oprah detractors were a silent minority — afraid to say anything publicly least they get a verbal beatdown by loyal Oprahites. I’ve been a victim of their wrath especially when I dared to question her supposed “benevolence”; for example, giving away cars to people who couldn’t afford to pay the taxes on them which, in some cases, amounted to thousands of dollars. Also, a couple of hard body blows where delivered when I criticized her spending $40 million to build a middle school for only 150 girls in South Africa.
So, it’s so good to hear that I am not alone in my dissent. Fans of the Mighty O, are now voicing their discontent on the Big One’s very own website, Oprah.com. Yeah, they’re getting in her face for real.
“In a thread posted this week, one Oprah.com reader wrote, ‘I am a HUGE Oprah fan. I love what she stands for.’ Still, the writer said that she was “disappointed” in Winfrey’s decision to support the senator’s campaign. ‘It is a manipulation and an abuse of her power and influence on the American culture,’ she wrote.”
And with the movie, “The Great Debaters”, which Oprah co-produced with Denzel Washington, set to open on Christmas Day, I wonder if this burgeoning backlash will have any effect on the film’s box office receipts. “The Great Debaters” is Oprah’s first movie since “Beloved” (1998), which was a terrible personal and financial disappointment for the uber-talker.
