Maddow Beats Mentor Olbermann and Continues to Knock King Off Rocker

It didn’t take her long. A week, maybe.

Ratings for Rachel Maddow’s self-titled MSNBC show (Weekdays, 9 p.m), have surpassed those of her mentor, Keith Olbermann, host of MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann (Weekdays, 8 p.m.) making hers the number one show on the network. And The Rachel Maddow Show continues to lay the smack down on the geriatric Larry King Live (CNN, Weekdays, 9 p.m.).

Here are the cold hard facts as reported by Huffington Post:

The Rachel Maddow Show was MSNBC’s top-rated broadcast Tuesday night, unseating Keith Olbermann’s Countdown as the network’s top show.

Maddow drew 1.8 million total viewers compared to Olbermann’s 1.6 million. Maddow also outdrew Olbermann in the advertiser-friendly 25-54 demographic, taking 25,000 more young adults than her lead-in Countdown.  (Larry King Live drew 1,710,000 viewers with 496,000 in the 25-54 demo)  (source)

I can see Maddow’s appeal. She smart without being too much of a smart aleck. It’s clear that Maddow does her research which garners her the respect of colleagues and guests.

It was reported that the hapless crew of the ratings-challenged Morning Joe congratulated Maddow on her victory while slyly gloating over Olbermann’s “loss”. (source)  Funny, it was just a few short months ago that host Joe Scarborough was treating Maddow disrespectfully during an appearance on MSNBC’s Race for the White House, likening her laugh to a “cackle”.  And during another appearance on the same show, he stormed off the set after taking objection to a question posed by Maddow.  Who is he kidding?

They are so damn messy at MSNBC.  So damn messy.  And way too transparent.

  1. Rachel is doing great, but this factoid of her having more viewers than Olbermann is spreading all over and is bogus, because Olbermann’s show is broadcast twice a night. To get his viewership you have to add his 8pm and 10pm numbers together. Remember 8pm eastern is 5pm in California so a lot of west coast viewers catch the rebroadcast at 7pm. So it’s bogus to compare Maddow’s total viewership with the viewership of just one of Olbermann’s two showings.

Maddow’s show is also on twice now starting this week, but if you compare her total (both showings) with Keith’s total, Keith is still ahead, at least for now.

    1. I am not so sure. I have noticed that Countdown and Maddow’s show’s are shown the same number of times, with both shows having repeat broadcasts throughout the night and into the early morning hours. But have noticed from time to time that Hardball doesn’t have as many repeat broadcasts. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, has fewer if any repeats during the night, and rightfully so.
