I’ve got one thing to say….”Camerooooon!” Yes, children, our queen, Cameroon native and Minneapolis resident, Bebe Zahara Benet (a.k.a. Nea Marshall Kudi) won LOGO’s RuPaul’s Drag Race and the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar. Let the dancing in the streets begin. (To read a Q&A with Bebe Zahara Benet, click here)
Although it was a fight to the end, our queen didn’t even chip a nail in the process. The other finalists, Barbie wannabe Rebecca Glasscock and punk chameleon/Latin siren Nina Flowers, tried to take the crown and the goodies that come with it (like cold hard cash and a starring role in the Absolute Vodka Pride Tour) but our Queen Bebe wasn’t having none of it.
In the final challenge, which was to perform in a music video with the mother of all drag superstars, RuPaul for her new single “Cover Girl (Put the Bass in Your Walk)”, our Queen Bebe did the damn thing. Wearing that lion mane of a wig and those signature curves, she bounced, rapped and sashayed right into the winner’s circle…
…Okay, there’s more to it. I wanted to end it there because is sounded so good.
After the video shoot, the girls had to walk the runway in their signature looks. Then the final two, (after Rebecca was told to sit her vapid ass down – – my words not Ru’s), Nina and Bebe lip synched for their lives with Queen Bebe emerging victorious.
Long live the Queen!!!
Besides hearing Queen Bebe’s announced the winner, my favorite part of the show was the TyTy Banks inspired individual “lunch” meetings RuPaul had with the final three. What was for lunch? Two Tic Tacs of course. “I’ve already had too many,” RuPaul tells Nina Flowers.
Now, what’s a reality show finale without a good aftershow? Nothing, I say. On RuPaul’s Drag Race: ReUnited, all nine contestants met with RuPaul and the judges. Those sistahs didn’t hold back and leveled some good verbal bitch slaps to the faces of judge Santino Rice (of Project Runway fame), and fellow contestant Rebecca Glasscock. I think they left a mark.
On a happier note: Nina Flowers was given the audience favorite award, Miss Congeniality, along with a stay in a Las Vegas hotel and some money to play the slot machines ($1500 to be exact).
And I know you are dying to know if there will be a second season of Drag Race. Hell yeah!! Auditions will be announced in near future. In the meantime, you can check out RuPaul’s latest album, Champion now available on iTunes.
Now, I must sashay away.
